”ssThis is my all time favorite objection that I constantly received when working with patients in a clinical setting. However, I cannot say that I blame them. Occupational Therapy (OT) can be confusing. I am constantly being asked, “What is OT? How is it different than Physical Therapy (PT)?”
What I tell my patients and clients is this: PT’s help you get from one place to another, and OT’s make sure you can do everything you want to do and need to do in that place.
While yes, this is over-simplified, I believe that it encompasses the role of occupational therapy.
Traditional OT is thought of as treating the individual, whereas Empowered Homes treats your space or home. Of course we get to know you, the person, really well through interview and assessment, but our end goal is to make recommendations allowing you to stay in your current home forever, or find a new home that promotes comfort, independence, and convenience!
Check out this research from 2017 that states “Strong evidence was found for home modification interventions to improve function for people with a variety of health conditions.” It pays to be proactive!
